Alen is an eight year old Iraqi child, who ran away from the city of Qaraqosh when it was occupied by Isis.
Today he lives in a refugee camp, and when he closes his eyes, he dreams of nothing but getting back home.
He wants to find his room, his toys, his school and his everyday life again.
He does not know that his city, like so many others in Syria and Iraq, has been reduced to rubble by war. Besides material wreckage, deep wounds have affected the psyche of these communities.
The future is one of reconstruction; building schools, hospitals and roads and populated by people returning home. We envision a future established through the mending of social ties and the healing of psychological traumas. We have imagined it, along with the women and men we walk with.
But only if we all join forces can we really elicit change and make a difference.
