Un Ponte per and the Italian Nonviolent Movement are heading the next Stop The War Now caravan, a network of more than 175 Italian agencies working for peacebuilding and international solidarity through nonviolent and humanitarian peace actions. The journey of the
caravan will start from Italy on September 26. To mark the occasion, Un Ponte Per is raising funds to support pacifist and nonviolent activists in Ukraine and Russia.

1. The legal fees for Ukrainian conscientious objectors who refused to take up arms. The case of the president of the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement Ruslan Kotsaba is exemplary: the Ukrainian journalist is on trial for a video recorded in 2015 in which he asked to boycott the military mobilization. Kotsaba is accused of treason and has already spent over 600 days in prison.
2. Nonviolent activists operating in the occupied territories of Ukraine. Nonviolent activists plan and organize actions despite great difficulties, putting their own security at risk, and asking the population not to collaborate with the occupiers. They launch petitions, produce educational material showing a nonviolent alternative, they organize actions to raise awareness within the territory. Supporting their action is essential because in Ukraine a militaristic patriotic education often undermines any trust in the effectiveness of the nonviolent struggle. But Ukrainians’ courage and resistance make this possible.
3. Citizens and activists in Russia who risk their freedom to spread anti-war messages. This activists, who want to remain anonymous for security reasons, produce and disseminate reports, dossiers and anti-war messages that they share through interpersonal, confidential and face-to-face communication channels. The motivation of those who support the war in Russia is getting weaker every day, especially among the youth, also because of the sacrifices that the government is imposing on the population. Russian activists are convinced that even an authoritarian government like Putin’s is vulnerable if military intervention in Ukraine loses support.
The StopTheWarNow Caravan
The STWN Caravan will leave Italy on the 26th of September and it will be back on the 3rd of October. During this period of time, we will build bridges and we will meet with organizations from the Ukrainian civil society (including trade unions) such as the Ukrainian Pacifist Movement, which works to promote a culture of peace and it supports the conscientious objectors, the Nonviolence International Ukraine for a nonviolent resistance of occupied territories, The Institute for Peace and Common Ground and All Ukraine Youth Centre.
